Overview Of Kwara State
Kwara State, often referred to as “The State of Harmony,” is a place of various landscapes and cultures in North Central Nigeria.
This state is surrounded by Kogi, Niger, Ekiti, Osun, and Oyo states. It also shares a western border with the neighboring Benin Republic. Ilorin is the main city in Kwara State, and the state is divided into 16 LGA.
Talking about the state economy, Kwara State thrives on agriculture, with crops like coffee, cotton, groundnuts, cocoa, oil palms, and kola nuts.
Services, especially in Ilorin, and livestock herding also contribute to its economy, and the state ranks relatively on the Human Development Index and boasts several tertiary education institutions.
However, despite being the ninth largest state in Nigeria in terms of land area, Kwara is not populated, with around 3.2 million people as of 2016.
Geographically, the state boasts two separate regions:
- The West Sudanian savanna in the west.
- The Guinean forest-savanna mosaic in the rest of the state.
Kwara’s wild beauty is enhanced by rivers like the Niger, which flows along its northern border into Lake Jeba, and several others like Awun, Asa, Aluko, and Oyun rivers.
In the far northwest, you’ll find the Borgu area of the Kainji National Park, home to incredible wildlife, including West African lions, elephants, hippos, and more.
The southwest hub hosts a part of the Old Oyo National Park, where crowned eagles, buffalos, oribis, and patas monkeys roam freely. Also, the people of Kwara State are as diverse as its geography.
While Yoruba communities are across the board, you can find Nupe people in the northeast, Bariba (Baatonu) and Busa (Bokobaru) communities in the west, and a small Fulani population in Ilorin, often seen as mobile herders.
In the past, it was part of the Oyo Empire and housed various kingdoms. Later, the Fulani jihad developed its influence, followed by British expeditions in the 19th and 20th centuries.
I can remember when Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Kwara was part of the Northern Region. It later became the West Central State in 1967 and was renamed Kwara State in 1976. Over time, some areas were separated to form parts of Kogi and Niger states.
