Let’s learn.

Run-Through Of Kogi State

Kogi is a special state in the middle of Nigeria that connects with ten other Nigerian states. The name “Kogi” comes from the Hausa word for river, which makes sense because the state has something incredible, the meeting point of two massive rivers.

This is why Kogi State is called the “Confluence State.” Economically, Kogi State is all about farming, producing things like coffee, cashews, groundnut, cocoa, oil palm, and yams.

They also extract crude oil and raise cattle, goats, and sheep.Kogi State ranks 23rd in the Human Development Index, and it’s a big player in Nigeria’s economy.

Back in 1991, Kogi State was created by putting together parts of Benue State, Niger State, and Kwara State. Since then, it has grown and is now home to about 4.5 million people as of 2016.

Geographically, Kogi State is a mix of forests and savannas. But what makes it far more interesting is the spot where two rivers, the River Niger and the River Benue, come together.

These rivers divide the state into two parts. People from different ethnic groups live in Kogi, like the Igala, Ebira, Gbagyi, Nupe, Agatu, Basa-Komo, Igbo, Idoma, and Yoruba.

When it comes to religion, it’s quite diverse too. About 45% are Muslim, around 40% are Christian, and the rest follow traditional beliefs.

In the past, this area had quite a history as there used to be plenty of smaller states and kingdoms. Some were tiny villages, while others were part of big empires, like the Nupe Kingdom.

Then, British explorers came along in the early 1900s and made Kohi part of the Northern Nigeria Protectorate. Later, It became British Nigeria before finally becoming independent Nigeria in 1960.

Though Kogi State wasn’t always what it is now. It was once part of the Northern Region of Nigeria after independence, but in 1967, things changed.

It became part of different states like North-Western State, Kwara State, and Benue-Plateau State. And in 1976, Kogi State was officially born, taking parts of Benue and Niger states, as well as Kwara.

They even created new areas like Western Benue State, southeastern Kwara State, and far southern Niger State to form Kogi State.
